Henry was a 33 year old farmer of Mendooran when he enlisted on March 26, 1917. He was assigned to the 7th Light Horse and after training he embarked from Sydney on the HMAT Port Lincoln on June 11 1917.

He returned to Australia December 22 1918 and died in 1958, aged 75. He is buried in the Anglican Portion of the Mendooran Cemetery.

The Gilgandra Weekly, dated February 2, 1917, reported that Henry had enlisted and was leaving soon. The story went on to say

‘Truly the Hobbs family have done their share in this war, and manifested the true patriotic spirit, The mother is an aged woman, and already she has given three sons to do service for the Empire, who are now doing their bit across the water. Harry will be the fourth son in khaki – truly a credit to their country, their mother, and themselves. The people of the district intend giving him a grand send-off on Wednesday, 21st February, at which the new recruit will receive a handsome presentation.’
