Peter Law was a 27 year old farmer when he enlisted at Dubbo on March 7, 1916 He had no previous service experience and his father, Charles Law was his next of kin.  Peter and his brother had their medical examination at Sydney Town Hall on February 2, 1916. Peter was described as 5’ 8” tall133lbs (60.5kgs), dark complexion, hazel eyes, dark brown hair and no distinctive marks. He was Church of England.

After training in Dubbo, he embarked on the HMAT Euripides from Sydney on September 9, 1916 with the 3rd Battalion. They disembarked at Plymouth, England on October 26, 1916. After further training he proceeded overseas to France on the SS Victoria with his brother on February 4, 1917. . He joined the 3rd Battalion in Bazentin, France on February 12, 1917 when the unit was in the Somme Valley experiencing the cold, mud and snow of a severe winter. During 1917, Peter was with the 3rd Battalion when it was involved in the major battles of Messines, Bullecourt and Passchendaele, around Ypres in Belgium. In February 1918, Peter was admitted with sickness to the 39th General Hospital at Havre for over a month.

During 1918, the 3rd Battalion helped stop the German Spring Offensive in March and April. In July 2, 1918 Peter was promoted to Lance Corporal.

While in the Front line at Lihons, in the north of France, Peter was wounded in action. He was evacuated to England and admitted to Bath Hospital with a gunshot wound to his left hand. After treatment and convalescence he returned to France, by coincidence, again with his brother Allan, and arrived in time to celebrate the Armistice on November 11, 1918.

Peter remained in France until he commenced his return home to Australia on the ‘Port Denison’ on February 19, 1919. He arrived in Australia on March 25, 1919 and was discharged on June 20, 1919.

Peter was issued the British War medal and the Victory Medal.

Peter died on October 30, 1955 aged 66 years.
